In newspapers and media, groups are often separated by seemingly innocent words like "them" and "us." Narratives arise in which the other is positioned against us. Gradually, invisible lines begin to form between groups, viewpoints, and people. This phenomenon is called polarisation, and it is present everywhere. Polarisation deepens divisions, creates enemies, and sets groups against each other. It causes us to listen less and judge more, making mutual understanding harder to achieve. And yet, there is another side to it: polarisation can reveal differences, bring injustices to light, and introduce new perspectives. But that only happens if we choose to listen and to connect. “Back to You and Me” consists of two separate book contents. Each one tells a different story, based on newspaper texts. Through this, I aim to show how language subtly draws dividing lines. The way the books are bound or rather how they are not bound symbolises how perspectives in our society often remain disconnected. It reflects the gap that forms when we don’t look beyond our own point of view. I believe we need to return to “I” and “you”: to see each other again as individuals, apart from generalisations. Like in French, nouns in Dutch have a gender: masculine, feminine, or neuter. I always found this strange, and even after researching, it still didn’t make much sense. That explains the title Unlogical. Most people don’t know the correct gender of many words. I collected various nouns and spread them typographically across the book. Readers can guess the gender, then check the small symbol at the bottom of each page for the answer. The key at the end explains what each symbol means. The design is simple, but the idea is a bit more complex, just like the topic for me. Religion, in general, is something that really inspires me . The idea of seeing and believing in something without it being proven is a deeply personal feeling. That’s what I wanted to capture in this work. John 3:16 is a Bible verse written in the Bible. This booklet is about visualising, through speech and image, what religion holds for me: a source of hope, love, and belonging. I want to shine a light on my religion and being a female Christian even though I know there are a lot of misconceptions. Through this work, I try to break stereotypes and truly show what my faith means to me and how I personally believe. I visited the country once, and during that journey, we explored many places across the island. In each region, we tasted a variety of local dishes—meals that left a lasting impression on me. These vivid food memories inspired me to create a map that links the dishes I ate to the locations where I experienced them. The map is divided into four A3 posters. On the back of each poster is a featured dish, including a recipe and a personal memory tied to it. The front displays a segment of the map, along with photos from the trip and a legend indicating the region’s agricultural use and economic activity. “Sharing meals, laughing, and cooking together: swimming in the Indian Ocean. Exploring local markets and street food stalls are some of the most memorable moments from my journey to my father’s homeland, Sri Lanka. To this day, Sinhalese cuisine plays an important role in my life—along with meeting family members during that visit. This map is meant to document my travel route, focused solely on the Sinhalese kitchen and its culinary traditions, as a story of memories. It speaks of how food brings people together, of the history behind each dish, and of the deep longing for familiar flavors and culture. It is a deep dive into the rich dishes of Sri Lankan cuisine and the people who prepare them. I believe many can relate to the desire to preserve memories. The banners display testimonies of transgressive behavior, collected by the creators through, among other methods, anonymous calls for submissions within their community. Often, these incidents fall into what is referred to as a ‘grey area.’ It might be a sexist joke, an unwanted touch, or an advance made without consent. These are experiences that often go unnoticed or unspoken—at least at first. This installation provides a platform for these kinds of stories, the use of paper symbolizing the vulnerability of bodies, boundaries, and emotions. The quotes remind us that the intimidation of women is all around us. Every incident is one too many. On the backside, the faces disappear, and replaced by distinctive patterns that each symbolizing a person through form. The work combines analog textures and digital projection to explore the overlooked beauty of insect anatomy. Using materials inspired by the surfaces of various species, I constructed a fictional insect by merging different parts into a single, hybrid form. A projected spider adds a digital dimension and animated movement. Throughout this process, I discovered that domestic violence remains alarmingly prevalent. Much of this violence happens behind closed doors, in the very place where one should feel most safe. In reality, home is one of the most dangerous places a woman can be. The maquette is made of paper as a choice to reflect the fragility of life, of people, and of the spaces we inhabit. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice tears, fractures, and holes, marks of damage that are nearly impossible to restore.
